Coastline Automation is an early stage startup working on autonomous driving solutions. Their initial concept was an aftermarket autonomous driving system retrofit, however they have since pivoted to focus on the application of computer vision and machine learning to power teaching aids for student drivers. Over the course of a two week sprint, we designed built and released three separate android apps to validate assumptions and test the user experience. Each iteration built off learnings from the previous release.

LEARNER’S PERMIT KNOWLEDGE TEST PREP

The concept of an AI driven teaching aid was well received in interviews, but when push came to shove, app downloads fell short of the mark. The solution was building a prep section to target student drivers prior to getting behind the wheel.

Virtual driving instructor

Student drivers mount their phone to the windshield, and go for a drive with their parent. Coastline records video and sensor data while they’re on the road. When the drive is over, the video and data is uploaded to coastline, which identifies skills to practice and master.
